International Day of Charity 2025: Celebrating Compassion, Inspiring Action
22.08.25 – Teya Pichsinee
When was the last time you gave without expecting anything in return?
Every year on September 5th, people around the world pause to reflect on the power of generosity. The International Day of Charity, established by the United Nations in 2012, is more than just a date on the calendar but it’s a reminder that kindness, in all its forms, has the power to transform lives.
This year, the day falls on Friday, September 5th, offering a beautiful opportunity to honour compassion as the week comes to a close.

Why September 5th?
The date was chosen to commemorate the passing of Mother Teresa in 1997. Known for her unwavering devotion to disadvantaged and marginalised people, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work. Her life’s mission embodies the very essence of this day: selfless giving.
The Spirit Behind the Day
The International Day of Charity isn’t just about donating money, it’s about fostering solidarity, empathy, and community support. Whether through large-scale initiatives or small everyday acts, charity helps:
- Alleviate poverty and hunger.
- Support education and healthcare.
- Strengthen communities by building trust and compassion.
In a world that often feels divided, charity connects us back to our shared humanity.
How to Get Involved
Here are a few simple yet powerful ways you can get involved in the global movement:
-
- Donate to a cause close to your heart, whether local food banks, humanitarian aid, or educational programs.
- Volunteer your time or skills with community organisations. Sometimes a few hours of your time is worth more than money. You can see what opportunities we offer here.
- Organise a local fundraiser—it can be anything from bake sales to creative digital campaigns.
- Spread awareness online using hashtags like #InternationalDayOfCharity or #GiveBack.
- Practice everyday kindness. A listening ear, a shared meal, or a helping hand can be life-changing.
- Participate in virtual or remote volunteering opportunities if you can’t attend in person.

Stories That Inspire
From grassroots initiatives to global campaigns, countless examples show how charity shapes the world. In Hungary, where the idea for this day first emerged, volunteers regularly provide meals for unhoused people. Across the globe, NGOs use September 5th as a launchpad for awareness campaigns and fundraising drives.
These stories remind us that generosity doesn’t need to be grand, it simply needs to be genuine.
Looking Ahead
As we step into International Day of Charity 2025, let’s remember that every act of kindness matters. Whether it’s giving resources, time, or simply a moment of compassion, we all have something valuable to offer.
Let’s honour Mother Teresa’s legacy not just on September 5th, but every day because charity is a language the world needs more than ever.
What act of kindness will you commit to this International Day of Charity?
Any ideas? If you have no idea, you can join us as a volunteer. It would be really beautiful that we’re trying to make this world better together. 🙂
